Individual & Family

More than one in four will need it before retirement.

What is disability insurance?

Disability insurance — often called DI, disability income insurance or income protection — insures the beneficiary’s earned income against the risk that a disability prevents a worker from completing the core functions of their work.

A worker may suffer an inability to maintain composure in the case of psychological disorders, or an injury, illness or condition that causes physical impairment or incapacity to work. The category encompasses paid sick leave, short-term disability benefits (STD) and long-term disability benefits (LTD).

Statistics show that in the US a disabling accident occurs on average once every second. Nearly 18.5% of Americans are currently living with a disability, and one out of every four people in the US workforce will suffer a disabling injury before retirement.

Types of disability insurance

Individual disability insurance

For those whose employers do not provide benefits, and for the self-employed. Premiums and available benefits vary considerably between companies, occupations and states. Premiums are generally higher for policies that provide more monthly benefit, pay for longer periods, begin paying sooner after a claim, or define disability in broader terms.

High-limit disability insurance

Designed to keep individual disability benefits at around 65% of income regardless of income level. Coverage is typically issued supplemental to standard coverage, with benefits ranging from an additional $2,000 to $100,000 per month.

Key-person disability insurance

Protects a company from the financial hardship that may result from losing a key employee to disability. Benefits can fund a temporary replacement for a short-term disability, or defray recruitment, training, start-up, lost revenue and unfunded salary continuation costs in the case of a permanent one.

Business overhead expense

BOE coverage reimburses a business for overhead expenses should the owner become disabled — rent or mortgage, utilities, staff salaries, leased equipment and the other fixed costs that do not pause because you are in hospital.
