What is Medicare Supplement insurance?
Medicare supplement — Medigap — insurance helps pay some of the health care costs that Original Medicare does not cover, like copayments, coinsurance and deductibles.
Some Medigap policies also cover services Original Medicare will not, such as medical care while you are travelling outside the United States. If you have Original Medicare and buy a Medigap policy, Medicare pays its share of the Medicare-approved amount for covered costs, and your Medigap policy then pays its share.
A Medigap policy is different from a Medicare Advantage Plan. Advantage plans are a way to get your Medicare benefits; a Medigap policy only supplements the Original Medicare benefits you already have.
Important things to know
Where people get this wrong
The window in which you can buy a Medigap policy without medical underwriting is narrow, and it does not reopen every year the way people assume. Getting the timing right at 65 — or when you leave employer coverage — is the difference between a policy you are entitled to and a policy you have to qualify for.
That is a fifteen-minute conversation with an advisor, and it is free. Have it before the window closes rather than after.
